Hello. I have a picture of a sword swallower from a travelling circus in Pennsylvania dated 1920 and would like to do a report on him for school. Does anyone have information on him or travelling circuses in Pennsylvania during that time?
Thanks, Sam Leuch
My name is Jason Allen. My parents were from a small town in Missouri. There parents were from Kentucky and their parents were from Georgia. I have two posters from the Allen Brothers circus. they both say 1931. one says Edmeston Aug. 12 afternoon and night. The other says Allen brothers long-horn ranch will be at Whitney Point September 15, 1931. They will have Texas Henry a real Texas outlaw and a bucking automobile built in Texas. It says it is the largest motorized wild west in tour. Absolutely no picture show not a circus real wild west. If you find anything that links them to any of these states I would like to know. I went to Cody Wyoming to the Cody museum and Bill Codys aunt was Sarah Allen from Missouri.
I recently learned that my father’s father was supposed to have been Herschel Allen, a sword swallower in Pennsyvania during the early 1920s. When I stumbled onto your 2003 circushistory.org post regarding such a person I was quite surprised. I wonder if you found out anymore about Herschel. I also would like to see your photo of him, if possible. If so, please contact me.
Thank you, James Allen
I saw your message on the Circus Historical Messages about a photo of a sword swallower from the 1920s in PA. As the Executive Director of the Sword Swallowers Association Int’l, I am constantly searching for photos of past sword swallowers to add them to our archives. I would be interested in seeing this photo to see if I can identify him, and if possible, I would love to get a digital copy for our archives. You might be interested in viewing our Historical Hall of Fame page, http://www.swordswallow.com/halloffame.php. Thanks in advance!
