A large influx of German circus performers entered the United States in the early twentieth century.  Many were initially contracted for short periods of time, but once in the country elected to stay and become US citizens.  During each of the World Wars, circus management tended to disguise the nationality of their German artists, often giving them new stage names to eliminate negative audience reaction.
